ECO1010H1F Mathematics and Statistics for MA Regular Stream and MFE Students

This course provides MA Regular Stream and MFE students mathematical and statistical foundations for their microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics courses with an emphasis on techniques and tools. The Math portion focuses on static unconstrained and constrained optimization, envelope theorem, dynamic optimization, matrix algebra and some differential and difference equations. The Stat portion focuses on probability, conditional probability, random variables, probability and cumulative distribution functions, probabilistic processes (such as Normal, Poisson, Bernoulli etc), Central Limit Theorems, parametric hypotheses and tests and Maximum Likelihood. Optional textbooks: "Optimization in Economic Theory" (A.K. Dixit) and "Econometric Analysis" (W. H. Greene).

NOTE: In exceptional circumstances, a regular stream MA student may be permitted to take the Math and Stats course for PhD and MA Doctoral Stream Students, ECO1011H1F. In these cases, written permission from the Associate Chair (Martin J. Osborne) is required PRIOR to starting the course.
