Economics MA and PhD Alumni
Interested graduates of the Master of Arts in Economics program at the University of Toronto formed a partnership with the Department of Economics to support student and alumni engagement, and to enable alumni to stay connected to the Economics Department through various activities. Specific goals identified are to:
- provide a means for Alumni to connect with each other and to share our pride in the U of T Economics Department;
- share news from/about Alumni everywhere and encourage/facilitate alumni and current MA and PhD student interaction;
- reach out to economics alumni at other institutions, associations and in industry to invite them as mentors, to speak at, or to sponsor events;
- understand the priorities of the Department and the needs of current students, and liaise with supportive and influential Alumni to promote the best interests of the economics discipline within U of T, in Canada, and globally.
Additionally the Economics GEU representatives and interested PhD students and alumni have also become actively involved in planning, supporting and participating in programs and events in partnership with the Department of Economics.
A core communication challenge we face on an ongoing basis is that alumni rarely retain their university of Toronto email address (or set up a U of T alumni email address) once they convocate and re-locate as they move to next steps in their career and higher post-secondary education, with the result that we quickly lose contact. We invite and encourage all MA and PhD graduates to update their contact information to stay connected!
We are looking for interested representatives from past MA and PhD classes to get involved with evolving and developing programs. For more detailed information please contact us using the subject Heading "Economics Alumni - Get Involved".
MA Economics Mentorship Program
The MA Economics Mentorship Program is designed to connect current MA Economics students (mentees) with MA and PhD Economics alumni (mentors) to share ideas and information on exploring career directions, expanding networks, and professional development. This program is launched annually each fall through electronic invitations sent to those alumni with active email addresses, as well as current MA students.
In this program, ideally mentors meet with mentees approximately three times between January and May to help mentees develop their skills, knowledge and connections to make a successful transition into their professional destination. As many mentors are located remotely from Toronto, mentors and mentees are also encouraged to communicate either by phone, skype or via email, to discuss how they are progressing with their professional development goals.
If you have questions about the mentorship program, or would like to participate as a mentor, please contact us with the subject heading “MA Economics Mentorship Program”.
Events | Workshops | Programs
Members of the department, GEU, and alumni partner to host several programs (e.g., orientation, social) and workshops (e.g. career, job placement, networking, mock interviews). If you are an University of Toronto MA or PhD Economics alumni or student, and would like to participate in events to connect and network with other students and alumni, like the “Life after U of T” event held annually in January, please contact us using the subject heading “Economics Alumni Events” to be added to the notification list. We hope and look forward to hear from you.
