PROFESSOR PHILIP OREOPOULOS'S WORK IN THE ECONOMICS OF EDUCATION
July 24, 2017

Professor Philip OreopoulosTwo papers co-authored by Professor Philip Oreopoulos that address aspects of the economics of education have been quoted in articles in The Economist and International Business Times.

A forthcoming paper by Philip Oreopoulos and Andre Nickow for J-PAL is cited in a report in The Economist on education technology, "Technology is transforming what happens when a child goes to school". Oreopoulos and Nickow review over 40 studies examining the use of adapative software by pupils, concluding that those using such software achieved higher scores than those peers taught by conventional means.

The second paper, published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, "What Sets College Thrivers and Divers Apart? A Contrast in Study Habits, Attitudes, and Mental Health" is co-authored by Graham Beattie, Jean-William P. Laliberté, Catherine Michaud-Leclerc and Philip Oreopoulos. International Business Times spoke to him for their piece "Why Some Students Excel in College While Their Classmates Don't". What happens after students get settled into school — or, rather, why do some students continue their high-achieving trajectory, while others, who’ve passed through the same admissions barriers, fall by the wayside?
