The Economics of Entrepreneurship course (ECO 352) has been consistently ranked as one of the very best courses at UofT. The course has received national media attention and is taught by a highly successful entrepreneur, Reza Satchu. Although the course is typically heavily oversubscribed, Professor Satchu is opening up additional spots in the class for highly talented and motivated students in their 3rd and 4th year. If you are an accomplished student who is interested in pursuing a career in entrepreneurship or leadership, you should apply for admission to the course.

Course Description

The course employs the Harvard Business School case study method, looking at real-life examples of entrepreneurship and challenging students to present opinions and defend positions as though they were in a board room. The course is practitioner-focused, addressing not only theory but also real world application to entrepreneurship and leadership. Many prominent business leaders and entrepreneurs serve as guest speakers for the class including Nadir Mohammed (CEO, Rogers Communications), Mark Wiseman (Senior VP, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board), Kevin O’Leary (CEO, O’Leary Funds and Dragons’ Den), Tony Lacavera (Founder and CEO, Globalive) and Tim Hodgson (CEO, Goldman Sachs Canada). Each year the top student in the course receives the Reza Satchu scholarship award.

Anti-Calendar Rankings

Over the past 3 years, Professor Satchu’s Entrepreneurship course has had an average student retake rate of 100% and an average student learning experience rating of 7.0/7.0. In each of the past six years, the Anti-Calendar has stated that this course is the “very best class/learning experience” at U of T.

Professor Satchu Biography

Professor Satchu has founded, built and managed several highly successful businesses in the US and Canada including SupplierMarket, StorageNow Holdings, Stellation Asset Management and KGS Alpha Capital Markets. He has a BA from McGill University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. He is also Vice Chairman of the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation and has been awarded membership to Canada’s Top 40 under 40.

Prerequisites for the course are as follows:

(1) In their 3rd or 4th year of undergraduate studies, as of September 2010

(2) CGPA of 3.0 or higher

(3) A written statement of interest (maximum 250 words) explaining why you wish to take the course and why you should be let in. In the statement of interest, include your CGPA and whether you are a 3rd or 4th year student. To be sent to the instructor at rsatchu@guildwoodcapital.com from your UofT e-mail address by July 19, 2010.

Students will be notified whether they have been admitted into the course in early August. In addition, if the course is full, qualified students are still encouraged to apply, as Professor Satchu has discretion in choosing which students are admitted into the course. Preference will be given to the most qualified students.
