This explains how to mark the multiple choice questions for a TA who has never done this before. To mark the multiple choice question forms, please follow these steps: BEFORE the test (or possibly right after): (A) Obtain a copy of the official class list. You may obtain this from the course instructor or by downloading it yourself from Quercus grades (a .csv file). (B) Obtain a copy of the answers from the course instructor. (C) Go to http://homes.chass.utoronto.ca/~murdockj/teaching/#marking_software and read the instructions. (D) Download the marking software (STATA do-file) and open it using WordPad, NotePad, or other word processing software (http://homes.chass.utoronto.ca/~murdockj/teaching/grade_mcq.do). Carefully read the instructions and fill in the fields already known. AFTER the test: (1) Organize the bubble forms so that they are all face up and right-side up. Handle the forms carefully to keep them smooth and flat: put any ripped or creased forms at the top of the pile. (2) Obtain an exact count of the number of bubble forms to be processed. (3) Give the forms to the Scanning Coordinator TA (for current contact information see: http://homes.chass.utoronto.ca/~murdockj/teaching/#multiple_choice). Tell the number of forms, the course number (e.g., ECO220), section (e.g. L0101 and L0201), the instructor's name (e.g. Prof. Pesando), and find out when the processing can be completed. You will need to go back to pick up the forms once they have been scanned. Give the Scanning Coordinator TA your e-mail address so that s/he may send the raw (csv) file of scanned papers and notify you when the scanning is done. (4) Pick up the forms and get the csv file (spreadsheet) of raw scanned answers from the Scanning Coordinator TA. (5) For students that write the test with Accessibility Services you (not the Scanning Coordinator TA) can manually add them to the spreadsheet of scanned answers. Please double-check your work. (Or, if you pick up those papers from Accessibility Services in time to add the to the main batch, you can avoid manual entry.) (6) Using a computer with STATA version 10 or higher, finish entering the required information into the do-file and run the do-file. Study all of the output files -- and especially the report -- to make sure there are not any errors or unexpected warnings. Fix any errors and address any problems in the students' data (e.g. incorrect student #) and re-run. (7) Format the results to post for students using the template at: http://homes.chass.utoronto.ca/~murdockj/teaching/mcq_marks_web_site.xlsx. (See note on first page of the report produced by STATA software.) (8) Send an e-mail to your instructor with ALL of the files including the REPORT and raw files so that they may re-run it after applying any curve or deciding to accept alternate answers. Make arrangements with your instructor for the storage of the original forms.
