Trends in Top Income Shares in Canadian Cities

Brian Murphy, Michael Veall*

Last modified: 2012-06-25

Abstract

Trends in top income shares are studied for Canada from 1982 to 2009, using the Longitudinal Administrative Database of Statistics Canada. This large, taxfiler data set permits accurate estimates for relatively small geographic areas. The analysis of trends at the city level is a useful complement to the study of national top income share trends as in Saez and Veall (2005)and Murphy, Roberts and Wolfson (2008).  To our knowledge, no similar study relating city and national trends in top income shares has been published for any country.
