Collaborative Program in Economics and the Dynamics of Global Change

This program is joint between the Department of Economics and the Dynamics of Global Change Doctoral Program at the Munk Centre for International Studies. It differs from our regular PhD program in requiring some courses offered by the Dynamics of Global Change program and in the expectation that the student's dissertation supervisor will be a core member of that program. It is offered on a full-time basis only with one admission date, September.

To be admitted, an applicant must satisfy the admission requirements for the Economics PhD. Once an applicant has been accepted to the PhD program in Economics, his/her application will be reviewed by the Coordinator of the Collaborative Program. The program of study will be managed by the Economics Department. Any financial support will be awarded by the Economics Department. See the Dynamics of Global Change website for program details and admission requirements and deadlines (which may differ from ours).

Year One

The first year of study is exactly the same as for a regular PhD.

Year Two

The second year of study is the same as for a regular PhD except that instead of taking the courses for a minor field, the student must take the following courses, which are together equivalent to two semester courses:
  • DGC1000H, Dynamics of Global Change
  • Two out of DGC2000H, DGC2001H, DGC2002H, and DGC2003H.
(See the Dynamics of Global Change program requirements for details.)

Years Three and Later

The remainder of the program is the same as the regular PhD program except that the student's dissertation topic must be related to the "dynamics of global change." Normally the dissertation supervisor will be a core faculty member of the Dynamics of Global Change program. At least one member of the dissertation committee should be drawn from a graduate unit different from and cognate to the Department of Economics.
