Note: Applicants must meet the admission requirements to the Economics MA to be considered for admission.

This program is designed to provide advanced training in economics with an emphasis on environmental economics. It is offered in collaboration with the Centre for Environment, which maintains a website about the program. The program is twelve months long.

Please see our page about admission to the MA program for details of the application procedure.

Courses

During the first eight months of the program, students take the following courses.

  • ECO2060, a one-semester course in Microeconomic Theory
  • ECO2061, a one-semester course in Macroeconomic Theory
  • ECO2408, a one-semester course in Econometrics
  • ECO2908, a one-semester course on Environmental and Resource Economics

Internship and Research Paper

During the final four months (May–August), students complete an internship and submit a research paper on an environmental topic (which may relate to the internship experience). During this period, they are enrolled in ENV4444Y and ENV5555Y. (Although these requirements are fulfilled during the final four months of study, students must register in ENV5555Y and ENV4444Y at the begining of their program in September, by completing a course add form signed first by the Environmental Studies program administrator and then by the Economics program administrator.) The internship should be the equivalent of about three months' full-time employment. A formal proposal for the internship must be submitted to the Centre for Environment by the end of the Winter Session. For more information on the internship placement procedure, please check the Internship Guidelines page on the Centre for Environment website. A copy of the final research project (ENV5555Y) must be submitted to the Centre for Environment prior to convocation. Student accepted to this program should register with the Centre for Environment and should contact the Graduate Student Advisor at the Centre for additional information.
